A Bill seeking to establish a federal agency for the conduct of local government elections on Thursday, July18, scaled through first reading in the Senate. The bill is titled, “Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024 (SB. 531)” The bill was sponsored by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa, (APC, Niger East).

President Tinubu Donates Trucks of Rice to 36 States and FCT

The Federal Government has donated 20 trucks of rice to the 36 state governors and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for distribution to vulnerable Nigerians. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday, stated that this gesture reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to ensuring food security for all Nigerians. He also said the Tinubu administration is committed to making sure that Nigerians have food on their table.

Akawe Torkula Polytechnic Seeks TETFund's Intervention to Improve Infrastructure

JULY FEDERAL ALLOCATION: Federal Government To Withhold July Allocations to Benue, Enugu, Rivers, Kano and 16 Other States

The Federal Government will from July withhold local government allocations to Benue, Enugu, Kano, Rivers, and 16 other states in compliance with the Supreme Court judgement. The apex court on Thursday delivered a judgment in the local government autonomy suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, on behalf of the Nigerian Government, barring the Federal Government from releasing allocations to local governments governed by unelected officials appointed by the state governors. In the judgment, Justice Emmanuel Agim barred the Federal Government from further paying LG allocations through the state governments, noting that the practice had been abused by the governors. Justice Agim accused the state governors of retaining allocations and utilising them as they please, to the detriment of the local government councils. In landmark judgment delivered today in Abuja, the federal capital territory and reported by This Day News, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has ordered the stoppage of the payment of Local Government Councils’ allocation through the state. The apex court in a judgement held that Section 162 (4&5) which stipulated a joint account for state and local governments have been defeated and being exploited by the various state governments hence, the need for an order directing the payments of funds due to the local governments from the federation account directly to the local governments. The apex court made the order while delivering judgement in the suit filed by the federal government seeking to pursue autonomy of the local governments. Senate passes North Central Development Commission (NCDC) Establishment Bill into law

The senate, on Thursday, 4th July passed into law the bill seeking the establishment of North Central Development Commission (NCDC), being sponsored by the senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Patrick Moro PhD and the other senators from North Central Nigeria.  The bill, which passed First and Second Readings on the 5th of October, 2023, and 21st of February, 2024 respectively was first sponsored in the 9th Senate by Senator Moro where it passed First and Second Readings but could not get presidential assent before the expiration of the 9th Senate. Governor Alia made the donation Saturday, July 06, 2024 when he paid unofficial visit to the school while heading to Vandeikya for an official function. He appreciated the school management and the students for the warm welcome accorded him and his entourage, describing all the students as his beautiful daughters who are future leaders.
