Akawe Torkula Polytechnic Seeks TETFund's Intervention to Improve Infrastructure

The Rector of Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, Makurdi, Dr. Martins Agena has called on Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), to extend it's intervention packages to the institution to help it actualize it's vision of becoming the hub for technical and vocational education in the country.

Dr. Agena said this in Abuja on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arch. Sunny Ochono.
The Rector was accompanied by the Ag. Deputy Rector (Administration), Mr. Moses Ieren, Ag. Registrar, Mrs. Veronica Makurdi and Dean of Science, Computing and Related Technology, Mr. Amedu Aiji.

The Rector said his visit was to specifically to seek TETFund's intervention to make up for the infrastructural deficit at the Polytechnic.

While commending Tetfund for their impact in the development of tertiary education in Nigeria, Dr Agena explained that his vision is to make Akawe Torkula Polytechnic a premier institution and forerunner in providing excellent technical and vocational education with cutting-edge skills tailored to today’s industrial needs. He said since the school is situated in the heart of Makurdi, his target is to take youth off the street and empower them with skills that would be beneficial to them and the society at large.

Speaking further, Dr. Agena noted that though as tall as his ambition is, the facilities at the institution are in dire need of modernization to meet current educational standards. That's why the visit was very important. He assured Tetfund that the facilities they would contribute to the institution would be put to proper use.

On his part, the E.S. Tetfund, Arch. Sunny Echono, represented by the Special Assistant to the Executive Secretary on Technical Services, Mr. Buhari promised that the agency would continue to do it's best in supporting tertiary education in Nigeria through its interventions in infrastructure and human capital development. He thanked the Rector and his entourage for creating time to come to the agency's headquarters to interact with him. Mr. Buhari promised to interact with the management to see what can be done to help the school.

The Federal Government will from July withhold local government allocations to Benue, Enugu, Kano, Rivers, and 16 other states in compliance with the Supreme Court judgement. The apex court on Thursday delivered a judgment in the local government autonomy suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, on behalf of the Nigerian Government, barring the Federal Government from releasing allocations to local governments governed by unelected officials appointed by the state governors.
