Breaking: Supreme Court Grants LGs Financial Autonomy, Stopped Payment of Local Governments Funds Through States

In landmark judgment delivered today in Abuja, the federal capital territory and reported by This Day News, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has ordered the stoppage of the payment of Local Government Councils’ allocation through the state.
The apex court in a judgement held that Section 162 (4&5) which stipulated a joint account for state and local governments have been defeated and being exploited by the various state governments hence, the need for an order directing the payments of funds due to the local governments from the federation account directly to the local governments.

The apex court made the order while delivering judgement in the suit filed by the federal government seeking to pursue autonomy of the local governments.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who delivered the lead judgement pointed out that Nigeria operates a three-tier system of government where no one tier is subordinate to the order.

The apex court in the judgement observed that for the last two decades the states have been retaining funds due to the local governments and disburse at their whims and caprices, contrary to the provisions of the Constitution.

Besides, the apex court has declared as unconstitutional caretaker committees put in place by state governments and ordered the stoppage of payment of allocations to them.

The apex court in the judgement held that state houses of assembly lacked powers to make laws empowering governors to appoint caretaker committees.

Agim made a declaration that any governor who dissolve any democratically elected local government greatly breaches the Constitution and commits a gross misconduct.

Hakim Ziyech Scores on First Premier league Start as 3 Stars Chelsea Over Minnows

Hakim Ziyech scores on his first Premier League start with Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner also on target as Frank Lampard's men pile the misery on winless hosts. The strength of Chelsea’s squad was underlined when £53million forward Timo Werner was summoned from the bench minutes before kick off to cover for Christian Pulisic’s injury in the warm-up. Frank Lampard’s plan had been to give Werner a rest after the five-thousand round trip to Krasnodar in midweek. But the German gratefully seized the unexpected opportunity to play another 90 minutes and score the third goal in one of the easiest wins seen at Turf Moor. Werner was decent but not even one of the stand-out performers given Chelsea’s dominance as they climbed to fifth.

GOVT. OFFICIALS USING THUGS TO DISRUPT PEACEFUL ASSEMBLIES IN BENUE MUST STOP - KUANUM

Saturday, 6th July, 2024 The Special Adviser on Pubic Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Hon. Terrence Kuanum has bemoaned the growing trend of officials of government in Benue State using thugs to disrupt peaceful assemblies of citizens in the state has assumed a menacing dimension and frequency which must not be allowed to continue. Mr. Kuanum stated that: "The trend is most commonly found with Caretaker Chairmen of local government councils in the state invading and disrupting congregations at churches under whatever reason they fancy. " Yesterday, the Caretaker Chairman of Vandeikya Local Government Council, Dennis Guda, in the company of thugs invaded and violently disrupted proceedings at the 40th Priestly Anniversary/Church Building and Celebration of Papal Award Of Monsignor for Rev. Monsignor Michael Nyitor Buter held at the Divine Providence Rectory, Bebe in Vandeikya Local Government of the state. "In attendance at the ev...

BENUE GUBER 2023: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? Making a case for Gwer People

By Samuel Allen Zenke Makurdi, Benue State.  Where Do We Go From Here? is an open letter to the Tiv People on "Social Conditions and Administrative Re-organisations" written by Wantaregh Paul Iorpuur Unongo 51 years ago (1969). I have read this "open letter" over and over, infact, more than a dozen times. Every chapter has a solution to our present situation in Tivland. One of the major issues Wantaregh discussed in the open letter was the Tiv "autonomous divisions - intermediate areas". In the past, the Tiv People were divided into five "intermediate areas - Kwande (Kwande & Ushongo), Jechira (Vandeikya & Konshisha), Ukum-Shitile (Katsina Ala, Ukum & Logo) Jemgbar (Gboko, Buruku & Tarka) and Ichongo (Makurdi, Guma, Gwer East & Gwer West)" respectively. This arrangement created a lot of confusion, division, petty and clannish nationalism. According to Unongo, "these funny arbitrary creations, which were introd...
